Part of the homework assignment we had for English this week was writing limericks and haiku. It’s always fun to see what kids come up with in poetry. Here are some samples of their work:

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends; we’re so glad you could attend! Come inside, come inside! (My apologies to Emerson, Lake, and Palmer)
Welcome to Mr. G’s Gigantic Blog. My name is Erik Glotfelty, and this is my 7th year teaching here at Fairfield Middle School. This is the spot where we will do our journal topics because 1) it saves paper, 2) it’s easier to read and grade, and 3) it forces you to be a better writer, since the WHOLE WORLD will be reading your entries. So please, no hidden messages, no offensive language, and always, always, ALWAYS write at least 5 sentences on the topic.
To begin with, why don’t you write 5 sentences about yourself? Call this a mini-biography. Tell us what you like, some of the things you can do, and so on.
Based on what we’ve read so far in “Dear Mr. Henshaw”, name at least 4 reasons why Leigh feels lonely.
We are about to read a story called “Dear Mr. Henshaw” by Beverly Cleary. In the story, the main character, Leigh Botts, writes to Mr. Henshaw, his favorite author, and asks him 10 questions about his life for a book report.
If you had to write to your favorite author, what ten questions would ask him/her?
What are some things you enjoy doing when it’s hot outside?
(Remember: this is a writing assignment. Your answers must be in complete sentences. A minimum of 5 sentences is required.)
Write a narrative about the funniest thing that happened to you while at FMS. This is a longer passage than just the 5 sentences I usually require. Your story should have a definite beginning, middle, and ending. This will count as a test grade, so do your best.
What are going to do for Spring Break?
What would happen if you threw a piece of trash on the ground? What if everyone did?
